It has come to my attention recently that a few of the leading innovation consultants and gurus are actively encouraging their senior level clients that they do not need to implement idea management systems, or adopt these new best practices. If you have any insider knowledge into the industry, you will probably know who these people are – you see them keynote at major conferences all the time.
I mention this because our view of life is quite different. I advocate using consultants. I encourage our clients to use a mixture of tools and methods, and to combine advisors to get a balanced view of an innovation process. I would never say “don’t use this tool… because I do not supply it”. That kind of absolutist advice, although headline grabbing, is unlikely to help solve customer problems.
So, I urge those of us who are growing the innovation industry to be nice to each other, and our clients, and take an inclusive view of innovation. It will be better for everyone.
