Book Review: Winning through Innovation – Tushman & O’Reilly

Categories: Book Reviews

Winning Through Innovation’, first published in 1997, was one of the first books to highlight the importance of innovation as a strategic process, laying bare the failures of ad hoc approaches, and providing a framework for successful innovation. Tushman and O’Reilly highlight the importance of congruence (organizational fit) both as a benefit and a drawback to an organization. For the authors, corporate culture is a critical dimension to innovation, helping to foster creativity or to hinder progress. As one of the foundations of the innovation movement, this is a must-read book if you are working at a strategic level on innovation projects, a book for senior-level people, not for the grunt workers in product development.
