I was reminded of a conference I attended in Copenhagen in June 2005 on diversity (cunningly entitled, ‘Innovation with Diversity‘). Diversity has become a buzz word in HR to some degree, and it makes sense that it has a role to play in innovation. I sense, though, that some companies are cautious about following through on their public diversity commitments. I believe that the reason is management and leadership’s general reluctance to involve other people in ideation and potentially having an impact on decision making. It is already hard for a company to listen to staff in an overseas subsidiary – listening to masses of staff will require a more open approach from management.
